Really, alarm bells should have rung when this supposed SEO company was doing speculative telesales. But that's a whole different story. The point here is that there are services in the UK that offer SEO for £50 ($65) per term. Or £15 per month. Realistically,
what kind of marketing can you do for £15 a month? These services do nothing or use networks of owned sites to add links. At best, they are largely jewelry retouching service ineffective. At worst, you could end up with a penalty or some form of negative equity. Cheap, yes. Nasty, most definitely. If you're building a long-term business, you don't want to focus on these low-end strategies. The bottom line here is that you are responsible for what is done on your behalf. If you employ a cheap SEO company and don't do research, it will really be your problem when things
don't work out (or you get penalized). If you are starting a business, you need to follow the rules of the biggest marketing platform. And the rules are not always very clear. But think in terms of value and common sense, and you won't fall prey to thousands of downright unethical SEO companies. It's not all bad news, however. There are over 5 million small businesses in the UK and around 30 million in the US, and the majority of them have really poor SEO. So the barrier to entry here is often not very steep.
